Clown
5"x7" watercolor on paper
In the early part of the 2000's, I went through a "strengthening" period of my life, and in my darker moments I would joke that there was a sad clown that followed me everywhere. This work was meant to capture that idea, underlined with the realization that both figures are facing the viewer.
My early watercolor works are largely geometric and simple. I wanted to capture the essence of watercolor: The textures, fluidity, bleed, and boldness of color. I felt that by adding too much detail would detract from the natural beauty of watercolor. I wanted to give the pigment as much surface area as possible.
This painting now belongs to the private collection of A. Starr.
